During a New York radio interview a couple of weeks ago, DJ Premier told Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg that he had submitted a beat to 50 Cent but that the multi-platinum selling rapper had turned it down.
At the time Preemo didn’t reveal any details about the track other than saying that it had been “Dope.” Since then though the highly sought after producer has elaborated on his comments and announced the fate of the rejected beat which had been submitted for 50 to use on his upcoming album Before I Self Destruct.
“I [used 50 Cent's] voice from Guess Who’s Back – “You’re now rocking with 50 Cent. Are you ready? I said are you ready?” Preemo told XXL magazine. “You know how he says that, with that like cocky attitude? I used that and scratching in the beginning with like this real mellow beat and the drums are smacking. It’s like setting it up like ‘Yo I’m back on my grizzly shit. I’m about to come rough.’”
Premier said that the track could have helped 50 Cent to reconnect with the streets on his new album. “It’s not like the illest beat I ever done but the fact that he wants to bring it back to the pure essence, I definitely know how to make sure that we’re on the right track for a street record.
The producer who has crafted beats for artists including Jay-Z, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Ludacris, KRS-One among others said that despite the fact 50 turned the track down he has no hard feelings. “Bringing that old voice back is almost like if he hit the reset button. So I could totally hear 50 killing that song…I’m not mad though. Fif’s my dude.”
50 might have passed on the track but Premier says that he has since given the beat to NYGz who are signed to his own Year Round label. The sound will apparently be entitled “Ready?”
