Shyne’s Father Elected Prime Minister of Belize

shyneFormer foreign minister Dean Oliver Barrow, who is also the father of incarcerated rapper Shyne, has become the first Black Prime Minister of Belize.

According to Reuters, Barrow swept incumbent Prime Minister Said Musa, with his United Democratic Party or UDP, winning 25 of 31 constituencies against six for Musa. The election marks the third defeat in 50 years for Musa’s People’s United Party (PUP), which has been dominating politics in the Central American country.

“It’s a great feeling. I’m extremely grateful and humbled,” Barrow told Reuters.

Barrow pledged to do his best for the collective good will of the nation in a swearing in ceremony on Friday.

“I, Dean Oliver Barrow, do swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to Belize and will uphold the Constitution and the law and that I will conscientiously, impartially, and to the best of my ability discharge my duties as the Prime Minister of Belize and do right to all manner of people without fear or favor, affection or ill will, so help me God,” he said.

Simillar to Barack Obama’s campaign for change, Dean Oliver Barrow ran on a platform of ridding the country’s rash of embezzlement scandals and reinvigorating the lagging economy.

Barrow’s son Shyne, was convicted of weapons possession, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment in connection with a 1999 shooting in New York.

The shooting occurred at Club New York in Manhattan where the rapper had been partying with Sean “Diddy” Combs and his then girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.

After a clubgoer threw money into Diddy’s face, Shyne produced a handgun and fired several shots, striking a bystander named Natania Reuben in the face.
