After it was announced that rapper Jay-Z had been taped to headline the traditionally rock based Glastonbury Festival, he was the target of a huge amount of criticism, with Oasis’ frontman Noel Gallagher even calling the decision “wrong.”
Jay-Z responded to the hate by opening his set with a rendition of Oasis’ most successful track “Wonderwall,” the performance [click here to watch] was received with roaring cheers from the Glastonbury audience who sang along with the rapper.
He then proceeded to go into a performance of “99 Problems” from his critically acclaimed “Black Album,” and was assisted by a live band as he rode the beat and encouraged the willing audience to join in.
After a performance of “Blue Magic” came what was possibly the highlight of Jay’s performance. As the big screen behind him showed an image of George Bush, Jigga gave an emotional acapella performance of his track “Minority Report”, which addresses the governments response to the natural disaster in “New Orleans.”
Jay’s wife, R&B singer Beyonce Knowles, was also in attendance and appeared to be “excited” as she watched his performance.
During the night Jay-Z also treated the audience to a performance of “Jigga What, Jigga Who,” “Show Me What You Got,” “Dirt Of Your Shoulder,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” and “Song Cry” among others.
He also perfomed a freestyle over Lil Waynes “A Milli” as well as his verse from the remix to Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab.” Amy Winehouse was also the opening act for Jay’s set.
Despite the media attention and critisism coming from Noel Gallagher, other rock acts showed support for Jay-Z during thier performances, Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro even performed a version of his song “99 Problems.”
As HipHopsHome.com previously reported, Jay-Z spoke to BBC Radio 1 DJ, Tim Westwood prior to his performance about the critisism from Noel Gallagher and others and accused critics of “Old School Thinking.”
“The world should be all about mixing culture,” said Jay-Z. “Hip-Hop is music in its art form. It should be accepted and respected. It’s all the same thing, it’s just coming from a different perspective.”
Glastonbury normally sells out very quickly after tickets go on sale, this time around however it suffered from slower ticket sales than usual which was blamed partly on the decision to have a Hip-Hop act headlining the festival.
It did however almost sell out with a total af around 142,500 tickets sold.
