Nas has revealed a new year long partnership deal with the athletic clothing company Fila.
“My best friend Will and I loved Fila, It represented prestige and everything that was cool to us.” Nas told Billboard. “When Will passed, we buried him in a black Fila sweat suit, so doing a deal with them has a lot of significance for me.”
Fila’s president, John Epstein, admitted that he had some “Trepidation” before making the deal but said that Nas fitted in with the Fila brand.
“One of my executives spotted Nas shopping in our Manhattan store and struck up a conversation with him,” John Epstein said. “Nas isn’t interested in selling out. He’s interested in being true, and that fits with our brand.”
Nas also spoke a little on his upcoming album ‘Untitled,’ formerly known as ‘N***er’ before he was forced to change it because of the distributors, he revealed that ‘Be A N***er Too’ would not be appearing on the album.
“I didn’t want to ‘n***er’ my audience to death, so ‘Be a n***er too,’ which I recently released a video for, isn’t on the album.” Nas announced. “It didn’t fit. The entire record deals with the concept, but…I had to pace myself.”
Vice president of Def Jam, to whom Nas is currently signed, said that Nas was more interested in getting the music to his fans than keep the albums original controversial title.
“Nas would not jeopardize his opportunity to get his music to the public, he understands that we believe in intelligent freedom of speech” Shakir Stewart said. “Meaning whatever stance you take, [you have to] be prepared for some accountability.”
