Through his Campaign, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has criticised and condemned a track by rapper Ludacris called “Politics.”
The song endorses Barack Obama but includes a number of negative comments towards his rivals, Hillary Clinton and John McCain.
On the subject of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic primary, Ludacris rhymes “Hillary hated on you, so that b*tch is irrelevant.”
Then moving on to address the Republican presidential nominee John McCain, Ludacris raps “McCain don’t belong in any chair unless he’s paralyzed, yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped, ball up all of his speeches and just throw them like candy wraps.”
A statement released by Obama’s campaign says that the song is “Outrageously offensive” and that Ludacris should be “Ashamed.”
“As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn’t want his daughters or any children exposed to,” said spokesman for Obama, Bill Burton. “This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with values we hold dear.” adding that “While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics.”
Prior to the track being released Barack Obama revealed that he often listened to Ludacris on his iPod mp3 Player.
Obama and Ludacris also met each other in 2006 at Obama’s office in Chicago where the two are said to have discussed among other things youth empowerment.
WomenCount also criticised the song and said that they believe a public apology should be demanded.
WomenCount’s Communications Director Rosemary Camposano called the song not only hateful but also sexist.
“It is another example of hateful, sexist language being used on the campaign trail, and now is our moment to make it clear: not on our watch!” she said. “The leadership of both parties must step up to condemn such hateful speech and demand apologies. The Obama campaign has criticized the lyrics, but we call on the presumptive party nominee, who is the celebrated subject of the new song, to go even further: Publicly condemn the song. Demand an apology on behalf of the targets. Now.”
Ludacris was not able to be reached for comment.
